Houseplants care in spring

On many occasions the arrival of spring marks the slow and certain death throes of plants, and although it may seem that the most difficult season has gone, certain attentions are required in order to make the most of this season. Learn about and apply this springtime houseplant care and watch your little ones develop their full potential.

Facing spring

Winter is the time when plants go into dormancy and it is not until February that plants begin to wake up, kick-starting the growth process. The problem is that with the sudden change in temperature and light, the plant can become stressed if it is not gradually exposed to these stimuli.

On the other hand, the arrival of this new season means environmental changes that favour the appearance of insects and pests. It is vital to pay attention to the changes in each plant and prepare it to face the spring in its best possible shape.

Tips for caring for plants in spring

  • Little by little

Outdoor plants have had time to gradually adapt to the changes in light and temperature, but houseplants that have taken refuge indoors have maintained certain environmental conditions, so taking them out for air, light and sunshine can kill them. So take it slow and easy. Don't expose them to direct sun or outdoors right away. Move them closer to the window, let them feel the sun and when the temperatures are more stable, you can take them out.

  • Beware of draughts

As the temperature rises, we tend to open the windows more to cool down and ventilate the rooms. These draughts can hit plants head on, stress them and cause them to drop their leaves. Remove them from these airways, in fact the vast majority of tropical species resent direct draughts.

  • Pay attention to watering

The first conclusion we draw is that because it is warmer, you have to water more; this is not entirely true and can cause you to waterlog the plant, resulting in yellowing and drooping leaves. Remember that there are no hard and fast rules when it comes to watering. The best indicator of whether it needs water or not will always be the soil: stick your fingers in the soil and if it is dry, water it. If not, wait a couple of days. This will allow you to notice your plant's new watering patterns this season.

  • Fertilise and feed

Spring is the ideal time to fertilise and feed your plant. This is the time of development, growth and flowering, so you need to provide all the nutrients necessary for it to complete its growth cycle. Remember that not all fertilisers are the same, so you will need to buy one that is suitable for your species. It is also possible to use some homemade fertilisers, although these may not be as effective as commercial ones.

  • Selective pruning

This should be done in early winter or early spring. Remove wilted leaves, dead or diseased branches, weeds if present and stalks that have not finished developing. Fear not, this will stimulate the growth of the plant, make it lusher and more splendid as the new shoots will come out much stronger.

  • Beware of pests

Not only do plants wake up and reproduce in spring, but insects also feel this incredible need to reproduce and multiply, so it's no wonder that during this season they invade your plants. You need a plan of action that allows you to prevent and attack if necessary.

Check the undersides of leaves, stems and flowers. Look for spots, blemishes, pinholes and other physical alterations. Check the substrate for unwanted bugs. Learn to identify common pests such as mealy bugs and fungi. If you live near parks or areas with vegetation, you should buy a multi-purpose insecticide as a preventive measure.

With these simple measures, you can get your plants looking their best in springtime and dress them up in colour. More flowers, more lustrous and abundant leaves are synonymous with happy, well-cared-for plants and happy owners.
