For beginners: Plants that need little water

Watering is one of those details that's hard to grasp when you're a beginner in this wonderful world of plants. There are those who get anxious and overwater, but there is no shortage of forgetful people who never remember when to water their plants.

The result is always the same: "sacrificed" plants and frustrated people who feel that they will never be able to have a healthy (or alive) plant. With this in mind, we have created this list of plants that need little water. They will be the allies of your beginnings.

The

amount of water a plant requires is determined by where it is and the climatic conditions, but even more so by its species, which will have developed certain characteristics to ensure its survival in extreme environments. From this perspective, we will find plants that withstand a lot of sun and heat, as they come from arid environments such as deserts.

Within this group are succulents and cacti, which have evolved to store water in their fleshy leaves, which are also small and pointed to decrease water loss. But xerophytic plants aren't the only option when you're looking for plants and trees that need little water. There are tropical plants that come from humid environments, but face prolonged dry spells and have learned to survive without water.

All of the plants featured on this list are easy to care for, do not require frequent watering, and prefer very well-draining soils. In fact, with this type of plant (and with almost all of them) it is better to forget to water them than to water them excessively, as this causes waterlogging of the roots that leads to root rot, killing the plant.

It is much easier to recover a dry plant than one that has been overwatered.
