Fun facts
Did you know that Euphorbias are not actually cacti despite their striking resemblance? The Cowboy Cactus, or Euphorbia ingens, has often been a silent, iconic figure in dramatic Western films. Its towering form and sturdy structure evoke images of dusty cowboy boots and sun-baked trails. In its native South Africa, it’s commonly referred to as the Candelabra Tree due to its branching form reminiscent of ornate candle holders. It stores water in its thick stems, making it perfectly adapted to arid conditions. While it grows much like the majestic cacti of North America, its latex-like sap distinguishes it, often used by locals in traditional medicine. However, this sap can be irritating, a little reminder that even the most striking beauties have their defences in nature!
Signs of weakness
If your Cowboy Cactus appears sad, watch for soft brown spots indicating overwatering or root rot. Yellowing leaves may hint it needs more sunlight. Keep an eye out for drooping, signalling it’s time for a drink if the soil is dry. Light browning around the edges can indicate a bit too much sun or a friendly reminder to adjust its space. Remember, a healthy cactus stands proudly, so address these signs promptly to keep it tall and happy!
