Advice

To encourage more beautiful blooms, give your Anthurium a rest period in winter. Reduce watering slightly and move it to a slightly cooler spot for about six weeks. When spring arrives, return it to its warm, bright spot and resume normal care, and you'll be rewarded with a flush of new purple spathes. For a striking decorative look, pair your Purple Anthurium with plants that have contrasting foliage, like the silvery leaves of a Scindapsus Pictus or the deep greens of a ZZ plant.

Fun facts

Did you know that the colourful, heart-shaped 'flower' of the Anthurium isn't a flower at all? It’s a modified leaf called a spathe, designed to attract pollinators in the wild. The actual flowers are tiny and grow on the central fleshy spike, known as the spadix. In Greek, the name Anthurium means 'tail flower,' which perfectly describes this unique structure. This plant is also a symbol of hospitality, happiness, and abundance, making it a thoughtful gift for housewarmings or any happy occasion. Its waxy spathes are incredibly long-lasting, often remaining vibrant for several months, which is why it's also a popular choice for cut flower arrangements. So, when you're admiring your Anthurium's 'bloom,' you're actually looking at a brilliant leaf that has put on its finest party dress to attract attention!

Signs of weakness

Is your Anthurium throwing a tantrum? Don't fret! Let's play detective. Yellowing leaves? It might be getting a sunburn from too much direct light or, ironically, its feet could be too wet from overwatering. Brown, crispy leaf tips? Your plant is parched and craving more humidity! It's dreaming of its rainforest home, so give it a good misting. Few or no flowers? It's probably a shy bloomer asking for more light or a little snack (fertilizer) during growing season. Leggy stems? It's stretching desperately for the sun! Move it to a brighter spot and it will thank you with a more compact, lush appearance.
