Kentia Palm

Howea forsteriana. Also known as "paradise palm".

This plant is native to Lord Howe Island, located in the Pacific. It is very popular for indoor and outdoor decoration because of its adaptability to all kinds of temperatures and conditions. It does not require a lot of care.

Recommendations
  • The Kentia needs a large space, as it can grow up to 3 metres high and 3 metres wide. Although it will take about 2 or 3 years to reach these dimensions.
  • These plants are not toxic for humans or pets. However, certain pets, such as cats, may suffer stomach pain or upset if they ingest the leaves.
Care
  • Light: Because it requires so little care, it can be placed anywhere you like, regardless of the light level.
  • Watering: Twice a week during the summer. In winter, once a week is sufficient.
  • Moisture: we recommend spraying once a week to keep the leaves nice and supple and to prevent the tips from drying out.
  • Soil: The soil should contain a mixture of peat, garden soil and some sand to facilitate drainage. We recommend that you look for a pot with holes in the base to drain excess water and maintain an adequate humidity level.
  • Temperature: Indoors, the ideal temperature is between 21-24 degrees. Outdoors, it can withstand up to 26 degrees maximum and 7 degrees minimum.
  • Cleaning: To protect the leaves and maintain their beauty, it is advisable to clean the dust from the leaves with a cloth of lukewarm water.
  • Repotting: As the plant grows, it should be repotted. This can be every two or three years, ideally in early spring.
What to avoid
  • Kentia does not tolerate extreme dryness or continuous over-watering, as this can cause root rot.
Benefits
  • It is a very grateful decorative plant, which works well in dimly lit spaces such as offices, foyers, events or shopping centres. It can be used to create separators for work spaces, or rest areas.
  • They help to purify the air, and improve productivity. It even helps to absorb noise to some extent.
