During cold weather, watering is less frequent
, thisis because it takes longer for water to evaporate when temperatures are lower. Because water keeps the soil moist longer, you don't need to water your plants as often as you do during other times of the year, such as summer or spring.
Make sure your plants get the light they need
At this time of year there are fewer hours of daylight during the day, so we recommend checking where your plants are located and changing their location to a place where they will receive the most hours of indirect but bright sunlight.
Take a look at your plant's light needs. If it's a Poto, Zamioculca, Fern, or Peace Lily, you don't need to worry as these are plants that can survive in the shadows.
But other plants that enjoy direct or abundant light such as Bonsai, Olive Tree or Fiddleleaf Fig Tree will appreciate being in a place with plenty of light.
Plants enter a period of hibernation
Your plants also go on vacation and take the cold seasons to rest from the processes of leaf development. If you notice your houseplants losing some leaves, don't panic, it's normal.
When temperatures rise again, your plant will wake up and re-enter its most active growth phase.
Winter
is not a good time to repot or change your pots, as these changes require extra adaptation effort from your plant (who just wants to be quiet during these periods of "hibernation").
We do recommend changing your plant's substrate at least once a year, but the best time to do so is during spring or summer. During these months, it's also a good idea to trim off older branches or roots so that your plant can bring energy to younger, stronger shoots.
Keep them out of the cold...and radiators
Don't leave your houseplants outside... They could freeze to death!
Some plants are more sensitive than others, but all of them generally like to be in average temperatures of 12 to 28 degrees. To place your plant on top of or next to a radiator is to condemn it to burn to death.
If
you notice that the tips of your leaves are brown, this is mainly due to a lack of humidity, a result of using heaters during the winter. To counteract this, you should only spray your plants from time to time. Another alternative is to buy a humidifier and place it near your plants.
