Meet Hugo Ruiz
In this edition of Plantfluencers ' Stories we talk to Hugo Ruiz, a great lover of plants, nature and indoor jungles.
Tell us a little bit about yourself....
hi, I'm Hugo, I'm 35 years old and I'm from La Rioja. Plants are one of my hobbies and currently I have more or less 160 in a flat of 65 square meters.
More or less because I don't know the exact number, at the last count in March there were 144, and since then, some more have joined the jungle.
what was it that attracted you to the world of plants?
Having a little piece of nature at home. I really like going out into the bush to breathe, to see greenery, plants, trees, peace.
At home, my partner Bea and I have a corner in the living room where most of the plants we have are, and looking at that corner is often enough to forget the everyday life in the city. Seeing so much green in the house is peace and tranquillity.

I started 3 years ago, specifically in April 2017 with some tiny cacti, a Tillandsia, which amazed me to see that a plant could grow without soil, and month after month I kept adding to the list of plants I wanted. 3 years later, here we are, with a house full of green living things.
what are the advantages of having plants indoors?
For me, although many people are surprised and don't understand how I manage to keep so many plants alive, in fact they see it as something laborious, I see it as an escape from this mundane reality. A routine of watering and checking, 10-15 minutes a day. Surprising yourself with the new sprouts, seeing that you get the hang of that plant that seemed to do more to die than to live, understanding them, seeing them grow, small daily illusions.
And one weekend a month, or every other month, pot check, soil, soil staining, smelling of damp substrate, black fingernails, I look forward to those days!

do you have any plant tips you'd like to share with us?
I've noticed several things I want to share:
- We fail many times by insistence or over-attention. Death by overwatering, for example.
- The most beautiful plant I have is the one I pay the least attention to. A Kalanchoe that we hardly water it, it was forgotten, and it is enormous.
- We all get some plants wrong, you just have to be patient and see what you are doing wrong, to learn and do better in the future.
- The advice on watering and light is very generic. What may work for me, may not work for you because you live in different climates.
- Look at your plants and learn from them.

what is your favourite plant? why?
Complicated question. Every month it's one. Sometimes I go for Calatheas, sometimes for Hoyas, Philodendron, etc. But I really like variegated plants.

And until recently the Orbifolia was my object of verdeseo (green-desire). And I got it a few days ago. Now, I am perhaps more attentive to the Hoyas.
