is it possible to have a plant near the heating?

With the arrival of winter it is necessary to change several routines; from taking out the winter clothes to turning on the heating. Another important part is taking care of your plants. If you have any outdoors, you should keep them well protected to keep them alive during these months. But indoors there is another thing that can affect the health of your plants: heating. is it possible to have a plant near the heating?

Plants vs. heating

Heaters and cookers are necessary to tolerate the low temperatures, they create a pleasant atmosphere but they dry out the environment, which is terrible for living beings that require humidity to maintain the integrity of their tissues. For humans it affects us, but for plants it can be lethal, because the leaves start to lose more water than they can absorb, dry out and die. For this reason, the closer they are to the heat source, the worse it is for them.

Hot air radiators and those that operate with an electric resistance are the most aggressive, as they create heat peaks in certain areas, as well as eliminating any vestiges of humidity in surrounding areas. Induction radiators or those that use water in their operation cause the heat to be distributed evenly throughout the space, so they tend to affect plants less, but this does not make them 100% safe. It is best to keep some distance between the radiator and the plants.

is the heating killing my plants?

If eyes are the windows to the soul of humans, leaves are the windows to the soul of plants. They tell you everything. If you notice that the leaves of your plants have one of these symptoms, it's time to move them because the dry air from the heating is affecting them:

  • Shrivelled leaves
  • Folded in on themselves
  • Yellow leaves
  • Dry, toasted, brown tips
  • Dull, dull and sad

Keeping plants alive in winter

  • If your plant is one of those that require high levels of humidity, like ferns and orchids for example, try to keep it as far away from the radiator as possible. Don't think about it, just do it.
