And no wonder, because the Pilea is gorgeous, with that long stem and a multitude of little round lustrous leaves coming out in all directions. It has a nice green colour and has a very good reputation in the prosperity department, as well as a beautiful symbolism.

On top of that, the Chinese money plant is easy to care for.

All about Pilea Peperomioides

Originally from China, the Pilea was introduced to the West in the middle of the 20th century by Norway, thanks to a missionary who took some stems and started to reproduce it and give it away to his acquaintances. The incredible thing is that it began to reproduce without the intervention of botanical experts, only through enthusiastic gardeners and plant lovers. In fact, this plant was formally classified in the 1980s, almost 40 years after it arrived on this side of the world.

Under Feng Shui beliefs, plants are living beings, they have their own energy and essence, so they will help to cleanse and balance the energy of the space they are in. To activate the energy of prosperity, you must have healthy, beautiful plants that reproduce easily and have a suitable shape to attract good chi.

The pilea is a favourite within this philosophy because it has rounded leaves that not only act as a magnet for chi, but it has the shape of coins; it is also very easy to reproduce and maintain. The Chinese Money plant is a beautiful symbol of friendship and generosity, as it is said that giving its shoots and cuttings to friends and family is a way of sharing one's wealth and attracting it. In fact, this is believed to further activate its properties.

where to place the Chinese Money Plant according to Feng Shui?

In case you are interested in the subject, in Feng Shui, spaces are divided into baguas or areas of importance (you can get the maps to learn how to differentiate these areas online). Each Bagua is related to an element of Feng Shui, which can be enhanced by the presence of a money plant, which will nourish that energy. If you want to work on your prosperity, then you can place it in the money bagua, which is located in the southeast of your home.

Pilea will also go very well in the health bagua, which is located in the east zone, as it is linked to the element of wood. This way it will be able to boost your health and prosperity at the same time. It is recommended to have it in pairs or trios, but never have 4 plants in the same zone because it is considered to be an unlucky number.

Lighting:

Pilea Peperomioides will grow perfectly and happily in very well-lit rooms, but never confuse lots of light with direct sun. It is a houseplant, as the sun's rays will burn its leaves almost immediately; but it is important that it is near a window or where it has plenty of light, otherwise it will not grow and its leaves will be deformed, folding inwards. In fact, the shape of the leaves will tell you if it needs more light or if it is fine.

It is advisable to rotate the pot of the plant every so often, as the leaves tend to grow in the direction of the light source, this will ensure that it grows evenly and lushly. If you see it growing too much, you can put a wooden stick to support it and guide its stem.

Watering:

The Chinese Money plant requires a moist but never waterlogged environment. It is better to under-water it than over-water it. In theory it should be watered a couple of times a week, but this can vary depending on the season and where you live; in fact, some people use the leaves to tell them when to water: if they look a little droopy, it's time to water them. You can spray the leaves a couple of times a week to improve its moisture conditions and make it even happier.

Substrate and fertiliser:

It is important to use a balanced substrate, which retains a certain amount of moisture but always with good drainage to avoid waterlogging. As for fertiliser, you can apply a little in spring and summer, but do not overdo it because you could scorch the plant. Follow the manufacturer's instructions and be patient, too much fertiliser will not make it grow faster.

Reproduction:

Chinese money plant will offer you offspring, which you will see peeking out of the substrate or the stem of the plant. Carefully remove them and plant them in a suitable pot. It is also easy to propagate with leaf cuttings with their stems. Cut off an adult leaf and plant it directly into the pot, burying the entire stem and leaving the base of the leaf in contact with the soil. A few weeks later you will see new stems emerging from the centre of the leaf.

This is one of the most beautiful parts of this plant: giving the offspring as a gift is a symbolic way of sharing your prosperity with those you care about.
